  • The Way of the Psychonaut

    Movie

The Way of the Psychonaut explores the life and work of Stanislav Grof, Czech-born psychiatrist and psychedelic psychotherapy pioneer. Stan’s quest for knowledge and insights into the healing power of non-ordinary states of consciousness, influenced the discipline of psychology and profoundly changed many individual lives. One of those transformed by Stan is filmmaker Susan Hess Logeais. The documentary utilizes Susan’s personal existential crisis as a gateway to Grof’s impact, from the micro to the macro.

Susan and Stan begin with a series of interviews that reveal his journey from material scientist to a spiritually aware explorer of the deep psyche. Interviews combined with re-enactments of Stan’s most remarkable therapeutic sessions bring to life the development of his theories. Additionally, a multi-layered visual story provides a framework of meaning to Susan’s personal exploration of Stan’s techniques and discoveries. The result is a powerful glimpse of what is possible for all of us.

Through his experiences, Stan gained a profound trust in the wisdom of the higher self, and discovered the lasting impact of unconscious memories from the birth process to influence a person’s life. In the process, Stan unlocked a way for renegotiating these experiences and liberating people from their traumas.

  • Pyschedelia The History & Science of Mystical Experience

    Movie

    Filmmaker Statement:

I’m a documentary filmmaker and professional film editor who’s always gravitated towards historical and biographical storytelling. My work as an editor has been featured on the national networks of PBS and Showtime, as well as major news brands like People magazine. As an independent producer, my films have been shown in museums, international film festivals, and in-studio on Channel 13 in New York City.

This project began several years ago while I was a student at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. At the time, I heard about a study using psilocybin to ease existential distress among people who were diagnosed with cancer and struggling with facing the end of life. As a self-taught student of the 1960s, reader of Timothy Leary, and fan of the Grateful Dead I was both mystified and intrigued by this institutional use of psychedelics.

Today we are in the so-called “psychedelic renaissance,” much of which gained momentum while I was making this film. By getting in early, I was lucky enough to gain access to characters and stories that are now difficult to capture. It was a labor of love for many years, and I’m thrilled to finally share it with audiences around the world.
